Notre Dame Beats Wisconsin at Lambeau

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish opened the 2026 season with a statement victory Sunday night, defeating the Wisconsin Badgers 41-13 at historic Lambeau Field in Green Bay.

The final score made the game look like a comfortable Notre Dame victory from start to finish. It wasn’t.

For much of the first half, Wisconsin gave the fourth-ranked Irish everything they could handle. Notre Dame’s offense struggled to find consistency, the Badgers controlled stretches of the game and Wisconsin went into halftime believing it had a legitimate chance to pull off a major upset.

Then the second half arrived.

Notre Dame completely changed the complexion of the game, outscoring Wisconsin 28-3 after halftime and turning what had been a competitive contest into a convincing Irish victory.

Notre Dame Struggles to Find Its Rhythm Early

The first half was hardly the dominant performance Notre Dame fans were expecting.

Wisconsin’s defense did a good job limiting the Irish running game and keeping quarterback C.J. Carr from getting into a comfortable rhythm. Notre Dame managed only 1.8 yards per rush in the first half, while the Irish were held without a third-down conversion during the opening two quarters.

Wisconsin also made several plays that gave the Badgers momentum.

Notre Dame did manage to strike first with a touchdown from Carr to James Flanigan, but Wisconsin answered with a touchdown of its own when Malachi Coleman hauled in a 28-yard touchdown pass from Colton Joseph.

The Badgers entered halftime trailing just 13-10.

Considering Notre Dame was a three-touchdown favorite entering the game, Wisconsin had to be feeling pretty good about its position.

The Irish, however, were about to put together a completely different performance.

The Second-Half Notre Dame Team Finally Appears

Whatever Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman and his staff said in the locker room at halftime appeared to work.

The Irish came out of the locker room with considerably more energy and execution on both sides of the football.

Notre Dame immediately began finding openings in the Wisconsin defense, while the Irish defense became increasingly disruptive against the Badgers’ offense.

The difference was striking: Notre Dame averaged 7.4 yards per play after halftime and Wisconsin managed only 1.4 yards per rushing attempt during the second half.

The Irish took control with a long third-quarter drive that ended with Aneyas Williams punching the ball into the end zone.

Then came the play that effectively broke the game open.

Wisconsin quarterback Colton Joseph attempted to make a play downfield, but Notre Dame cornerback DJ McKinney intercepted the pass and raced 55 yards for a touchdown.

Just like that, a 20-10 Notre Dame lead became 27-10.

Wisconsin never truly recovered.

Aneyas Williams Provides the Spark on the Ground

One of the biggest positives for Notre Dame was the performance of running back Aneyas Williams.

Williams carried the ball 20 times for 90 yards and scored two touchdowns, providing the Irish with a dependable presence in the running game as the night progressed.

His biggest impact came in the second half, when Notre Dame’s offensive line began creating more room and Williams took advantage.

After struggling to consistently run the football early, the Irish finally began generating chunk plays on the ground. Williams’ ability to keep the Wisconsin defense honest helped open up opportunities for Carr and the passing game.

His two touchdowns were exactly what Notre Dame needed to turn its second-half momentum into points.

C.J. Carr Delivers a Strong Opening Performance

Carr’s night was another encouraging sign for the Irish.

The junior quarterback completed 19 of 29 passes for 239 yards, throwing two touchdowns without an interception. Even though the offense wasn’t particularly sharp in the first half, Carr remained composed and eventually began finding more opportunities downfield.

He connected with nine different Notre Dame receivers, showing just how many weapons the Irish can utilize in the passing game.

Carr’s final numbers were solid, but the most encouraging aspect may have been the way he responded after a relatively quiet first half.

As Notre Dame’s offense began clicking after halftime, Carr became more aggressive and efficient.

Jordan Faison Leads the Irish Receiving Attack

Jordan Faison was one of Carr’s most important targets throughout the night.

Faison finished with four receptions for 81 yards, including a 30-yard reception that helped demonstrate the big-play potential of Notre Dame’s receiving corps.

His ability to stretch the field gave Wisconsin another problem to deal with once the Irish running game started getting going.

Notre Dame’s passing attack ultimately became much more balanced as the game progressed, with multiple receivers making meaningful contributions.

James Flanigan Has a Special Night at Lambeau

Few players had a more memorable night than James Flanigan.

The Green Bay native caught Notre Dame’s first touchdown of the night on a three-yard reception from Carr, giving the Irish an early 10-3 advantage.

Flanigan’s touchdown was particularly meaningful because his father and grandfather, both named Jim Flanigan, played for the Green Bay Packers. Scoring a touchdown at Lambeau Field in front of his hometown crowd made the moment even more special.

It was a perfect storyline for a game being played at one of the most iconic venues in American football.

Nolan James Jr. Adds the Finishing Touch

With the outcome essentially decided, Notre Dame wasn’t finished.

Carr connected with Nolan James Jr. for a 28-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter, pushing the Irish lead to 40-13 before the extra point.

James Jr. also contributed on the ground, finishing with seven carries for 19 yards while adding four receptions for 67 yards.

His late touchdown provided the final offensive highlight of an impressive second-half performance.

DJ McKinney’s Pick-Six Changes Everything

While Notre Dame’s offense deserves plenty of credit, DJ McKinney may have delivered the game’s biggest individual defensive play.

His 55-yard interception return for a touchdown came early in the third quarter and completely changed the momentum.

Wisconsin had already seen Notre Dame begin to pull away, but the pick-six turned a competitive game into a potential blowout.

From there, the Irish defense continued to make life difficult for the Badgers.

Notre Dame finished the game with two takeaways while Wisconsin turned the ball over twice.

Notre Dame’s Defense Takes Over After Halftime

The defensive performance was particularly impressive considering Wisconsin had success moving the ball early.

Once the Irish adjusted, however, Wisconsin struggled to sustain drives.

The Badgers finished with 284 total yards, while Notre Dame’s defense held them to just 1.4 yards per rushing attempt during the second half.

The Irish also received important contributions from the defensive front, including a sack from Boubacar Traore and another from Femi Brewu late in the contest.

The secondary also made the biggest play of the game with McKinney’s interception return.

Notre Dame’s defense wasn’t perfect, but it became significantly more physical and disruptive as the night progressed.

The Numbers Tell the Story

The final statistics illustrate just how dramatically the game changed.

Notre Dame finished with 350 total yards compared with Wisconsin’s 284, but the most important number was the scoring margin after halftime.

Notre Dame 28, Wisconsin 3.

That second-half explosion turned a three-point halftime lead into a 28-point victory.

The Irish also finished with 20 first downs compared with Wisconsin’s 16 and averaged 5.7 yards per play for the game. Most importantly, Notre Dame protected the football and finished with zero turnovers.

A Promising Start to the 2026 Season

Notre Dame didn’t play a perfect game at Lambeau Field.

In fact, the first half exposed some areas the Irish will need to clean up.

The running game was inconsistent early. The offense struggled on third down. Wisconsin’s defense was able to disrupt Notre Dame’s rhythm and keep the game within one possession for most of the first half.

But the response was exactly what Notre Dame needed.

The Irish came out of halftime and looked like a completely different football team.

Carr settled in. Williams found running room. Faison made big plays. James contributed a late touchdown. McKinney delivered a momentum-changing pick-six. And the Notre Dame defense gradually took control of the game.

That’s what made the 41-13 victory so encouraging.

Notre Dame didn’t simply beat Wisconsin. The Irish weathered a difficult first half, made adjustments and then dominated the final 30 minutes.

The victory gives Notre Dame a 1-0 start to the 2026 season and provides plenty of momentum heading into next week’s matchup with Rice.

If the Irish can build on the football they played in the second half at Lambeau Field, Notre Dame could be in for a very interesting season.

Notre Dame vs Wisconsin Predictions 2026 Shamrock Series

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team begin the season this Sunday, September 6 and it will be at a historic football stadium.

Notre Dame will take on the Wisconsin Badgers in the 2026 Shamrock Series at historic Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, with the game airing nationally on NBC and Peacock.

This will be a particularly memorable Shamrock Series matchup because it marks the first time Notre Dame has played at Lambeau Field. The stadium has hosted very few college football games, making the setting even more special. Lambeau also has a unique connection to Notre Dame: it was named after Curly Lambeau, a former Notre Dame player who went on to found the Green Bay Packers.

The Irish enter the season ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press Top 25, while Wisconsin comes into the matchup as a significant underdog.

For Notre Dame, however, this isn’t simply an exhibition in a historic stadium. It is the first opportunity to establish the identity of a team with legitimate College Football Playoff aspirations.

A Huge Stage for the Season Opener

There aren’t many better ways to begin a season than playing at Lambeau Field.

The Shamrock Series has become one of Notre Dame’s signature traditions, allowing the Irish to take their program to unique locations around the country. This year’s matchup takes that concept to another level.

Lambeau Field is one of the most recognizable stadiums in American sports, and the atmosphere should be tremendous. Wisconsin fans will undoubtedly make their presence felt, creating an environment that could feel considerably different from a typical neutral-site game.

Notre Dame is officially the home team for the Shamrock Series matchup, but the Irish shouldn’t expect to have a traditional home-field advantage.

That makes the opening few minutes particularly important.

Notre Dame Needs a Fast Start

One of the biggest questions surrounding Notre Dame entering the season is whether the Irish can avoid a sluggish opening performance.

There is too much talent on this roster to spend the first quarter trying to figure things out.

Quarterback CJ Carr returns to lead the offense, and he has been named one of Notre Dame’s four captains for the 2026 season. Joining him as captains are linebacker Drayk Bowen, safety Adon Shuler and wide receiver Jordan Faison.

Carr’s ability to settle into the game quickly could be one of the most important factors in the opener.

Notre Dame doesn’t necessarily need to score on every possession, but the Irish need to establish control early. A couple of long, sustained drives would go a long way toward settling the team down and taking some of the energy out of the Wisconsin crowd.

Control the Line of Scrimmage

If Notre Dame wants to make a statement, it needs to dominate the line of scrimmage.

Wisconsin has traditionally built its identity around physical football, particularly in the running game. But the Badgers enter 2026 with a significantly reworked roster and a number of new starters.

Wisconsin also has concerns along the offensive line, where injuries have limited the development of the starting unit during fall camp.

That could give Notre Dame an opportunity.

The Irish defensive front needs to create consistent pressure without having to send extra defenders on every down. If Notre Dame can stop Wisconsin’s running game and force the Badgers into obvious passing situations, the Irish defense should have a significant advantage.

On the other side of the ball, Notre Dame’s offensive line needs to establish the running game.

A balanced attack would make life much easier for Carr and prevent Wisconsin from simply loading up against the pass.

Don’t Let Wisconsin Hang Around

This is perhaps the biggest danger for Notre Dame.

The Irish are expected to win this game comfortably, but Wisconsin has nothing to lose.

The Badgers are entering the season with plenty of questions, and an early lead against a highly ranked Notre Dame team would completely change the complexion of the game.

Notre Dame cannot afford turnovers, busted coverages or unnecessary penalties that allow Wisconsin to remain within striking distance.

The longer the Badgers stay in the game, the more pressure shifts onto Notre Dame.

A touchdown drive late in the first half or early in the third quarter could be the difference between a competitive game and a comfortable Notre Dame victory.

Notre Dame’s Defense Could Be the Difference

While much of the preseason attention will naturally focus on Carr and the Irish offense, I believe the defense has a chance to determine how this game plays out.

Wisconsin appears to be trying to establish a more balanced identity under head coach Luke Fickell, and the Badgers have added depth and new pieces throughout the roster.

Notre Dame needs to make Wisconsin one-dimensional.

If the Irish can stop the run, force Wisconsin into third-and-long situations and create pressure, Notre Dame should have opportunities to generate turnovers.

The defensive leadership of Bowen and Shuler will also be important in an unusual season-opening environment.

The Shamrock Series Factor

The location makes this game unlike any other contest on Notre Dame’s 2026 schedule.

The Irish aren’t simply playing Wisconsin. They’re playing Wisconsin at Lambeau Field.

Notre Dame and Wisconsin last met in 2021, when the Irish defeated the Badgers 41-13 at Soldier Field in Chicago. Notre Dame currently leads the all-time series 9-2-6.

This year’s matchup is the second installment of the planned Shamrock Series series between the programs, and the first time Notre Dame will take the field inside Lambeau.

The setting should provide plenty of distractions throughout the weekend. Notre Dame has already embraced the Lambeau theme with special Shamrock Series uniforms inspired in part by the Packers’ iconic look.

Once kickoff arrives, though, the Irish need to forget about the spectacle and focus on football.

My Notre Dame vs. Wisconsin Prediction

On paper, this is a difficult matchup for Wisconsin.

Notre Dame has considerably higher expectations entering the season, returns an established quarterback in Carr, and possesses the overall depth needed to eventually wear down the Badgers.

Wisconsin’s best chance is to make this a physical, low-scoring game, control the clock and force Notre Dame into mistakes.

I don’t expect that to happen.

I expect Wisconsin to play hard early, particularly with the energy of playing at Lambeau Field. Notre Dame may need a little time to settle into the game, but the Irish should gradually take control.

Prediction: Notre Dame 34, Wisconsin 13

I expect Notre Dame to lead by somewhere around a touchdown or two at halftime before pulling away in the second half.

A comfortable victory would give Marcus Freeman’s team exactly what it needs heading into the rest of September: confidence, momentum and evidence that the Irish are capable of playing up to their preseason expectations.

What Notre Dame Needs to Do to Beat Wisconsin

  1. Start fast
Notre Dame cannot allow Wisconsin to build confidence in the opening quarter.
  2. Stop the run
Make Wisconsin throw the football and put the game in the hands of the Badgers’ passing attack.
  3. Protect CJ Carr
Give Carr time to operate and avoid putting the offense into predictable passing situations.
  4. Establish the running game
A productive ground attack would control the clock and open up opportunities downfield.
  5. Win the turnover battle
The easiest way for Wisconsin to make this a close game is for Notre Dame to give it extra possessions.
  6. Avoid penalties
Playing at a neutral site means Notre Dame can’t afford to give Wisconsin free yards.
  7. Finish the game
If Notre Dame takes control in the second half, it needs to step on the gas rather than allowing Wisconsin back into the contest.

Final Thoughts

Notre Dame couldn’t have asked for a more memorable opening to the 2026 season.

A Sunday night game at Lambeau Field. A Shamrock Series matchup. A historic opponent in Wisconsin. A national television audience. And a Notre Dame team entering the season with College Football Playoff expectations.

The Irish need to treat it like more than a spectacle.

If Notre Dame can play disciplined football, control the line of scrimmage and avoid the mistakes that can allow an underdog to hang around, the Irish should leave Green Bay with a convincing victory.

And if Notre Dame does exactly that, the 2026 season could get off to a very promising start.

ND vs Wisconsin Highlights 2021

I would have awarded the game ball to Graham Mertz the Wisconsin QB who threw 4 picks and two for TD’s – Cam Hart got 2 and Jack Kiser an Drew White each had a pick six sealing the game.

Chris Tyree had a big kick return for 96 yards that really triggered the ND resurgence. The whole defense played great especially when Wisconsin was 3rd & 4th short. Really good play by ND’s front 7 especially the D linemen.

I’d give another game ball to ND’s punter Bramblett who consistently backed up Wisconsin deep in their territory.

Once again the ND OL was awful especially the LT and RG. Kristofic played well at LG but I would switch him to RG and insert Rocco Spindler as LG. They were raving about him all Spring and summer. He was a very highly rated recruit and barring an injury he needs to play this year.

QB situation is worsening every game with Jack Coan getting battered until he got hurt and left the game. I like Drew Pyne. – cocky, self assured and he can pass. If he was 6’2″ he would have started this year. It’s a perfect chance to replace Coan who is injured.

Notre Dame vs Wisconsin Predictions

Even though I hate these early games – this game in Chicago starts at 11 AM Chicago time. I’m not too worried except if ND comes out sleep walking.

I saw the opener Wisconsin vs. Penn State and I was not impressed with either team and definitely not impressed with the Badgers QB Graham Mertz. If ND can harass this guy and get in his face he will melt down.

Wisconsin does have a very good front seven so I would go all air express against them, but ND must protect Jack Coan. I expect Wisconsin will zero in on Kyren Williams and I think Chris Tyree will have a monster game receiving passes.

I know everyone is predicting a close game – I think Kyle Hamilton gets 4 picks.

In Other news ND’s 2023 Class just picked up 4 Star RB Sedrick Irvin 5’10 190 out of Florida.

Score Prediction: Notre Dame 30 Wisconsin 17
