Here’s everything you need to know about what to expect and the key players who could steal the show.

What to Expect at the 2026 Notre Dame Blue-Gold Game

The Blue-Gold Game splits the squad into two teams (Blue and Gold) for a competitive yet controlled scrimmage that highlights depth, scheme installation, and individual battles.

Don’t expect a traditional game script—coaches prioritize player development, situational drills, and avoiding injuries—but you will see explosive plays, big hits, and plenty of offensive fireworks from a unit many analysts call one of the most talented in the country.

The Blue-Gold game is a family friendly atmosphere with plenty of tailgating time and a lot of sponsor activities.

Ok – now what we should expect to see on the field:

  • Offensive explosiveness under coordinator Mike Denbrock, with a veteran line protecting a proven quarterback.
  • Defensive aggression from a unit stacked with returning starters and high-upside newcomers.
  • Depth chart battles across every position as Freeman and his staff evaluate who’s ready to contribute in the fall.

It’s the perfect low-stakes environment to spot rising stars before the real games begin.

Players to Watch in the Notre Dame Blue-Gold Game

With a roster many are calling the deepest in recent memory, several standouts are poised to shine on April 25. Here are the must-watch names for the 2026 Blue-Gold Game:

Offense

  • CJ Carr (QB): The redshirt sophomore enters his second full season as the undisputed starter after a breakout 2025 campaign. Watch for his poise in the pocket, downfield accuracy, and ability to extend plays—Carr is already generating Heisman buzz and will run the show in this scrimmage.
  • Mylan Graham (WR): The Ohio State transfer has turned heads all spring with his speed and route-running. He’s a prime candidate to emerge as Carr’s go-to target and could put on a highlight-reel show.
  • Aneyas Williams (RB): As the lead back in a deep room, Williams brings vision, burst, and big-play ability. Look for him to dominate between the tackles while freshmen like Nolan James Jr. get their shots.
  • Will Black (OL, LT): The highly touted freshman left tackle is already drawing comparisons to past Notre Dame greats. His pass protection and run-blocking reps will be a focal point for the offense’s success.
  • Cam Williams & Jaden Greathouse (WRs): Depth at receiver is a strength—watch these veterans battle for snaps alongside Graham and Jordan Faison in what could be the Irish’s best receiving corps in years.

Defense

  • Keon Keeley (Edge): The junior is primed for a breakout after flashing promise last season. His pass-rush explosiveness could create chaos in the Blue-Gold Game.
  • Dallas Golden (Nickel/DB): Versatile and physical, Golden is battling for a starting role in a crowded secondary. Expect big hits and coverage highlights.
  • Joey O’Brien (Safety, Freshman): One of the top incoming talents, O’Brien’s range and instincts could earn him early playing time. He’s a name to circle for future impact.

These battles and emerging talents are exactly why the Blue-Gold Game is must see viewing for Notre Dame fans.

2024 Blue Gold Game Highlights

This ND team is absolutely loaded with talent. That could present problems as to who plays this year. ND has a load of top quality Linebackers – how do they keep them all happy?

QB Leonard will start, but it remains to be seen if he can complete a season. Angeli is more of a manager and is a competent backup. So for the 2 younger guys they might get into some mop up opportunities, but why waste a year just handing off.

So Kenny Minchey and freshman CJ Carr will battle it out for 2025 – a year from now. Will that satisfy either? I think 1 may go after Spring evaluations and roll in and Deuce coming aboard for 2025 makes a big crowd in the QB room.

Under no circumstances can ND afford to lose Carr. He has potential ALL PRO talent. We don’t need another Golson so Minchey will go.

The game itself showed a lot to be happy about if they can fix the OL.

Blue Gold Game Highlights 2023

Sam Hartman led the Gold team with 2 TD passes and one run. He looked really good while Tyler Buchner had a bad day.

All the linebackers looked very good and very fast.

Billy Schrauth got bull rushed 2x and was rocked.

Rocco Spindler just might have won a starting guard spot.

In addition, the Irish pick up Commit number 10 for the 2024 Class. He is a surprise out of Georgia – 4 Star DE Cole Mullins 6’4″ 240 lbs. This is an excellent get for the DL.

ND Blue Gold Game 2022

Gold team beats Blue 13-10 on the outstanding play of Frosh QB Steve Angeli who dove for the pylon as the game ended.

Angeli was 11/13 180 yards which included a 51 yard pass and run to Jadarios Price — talk about fast.

Audric Estime showed bullish strength going 13/59 including a long 25 yard run.

ND desperately needs new kickers.

Drew Pyne failed to impress and seemed to lose his swagger of last year.

The defense out played the offense.

Why ND won’t put names on jerseys is beyond me.

Blue Gold Game

What beautiful weather to play football. These glorified scrimmages tend to get boring nevertheless it was nice to see the perfect 50 yard pass Ian Book threw.

Book looked crisp, fast release and almost perfect placement. I believe he has 2 years of eligibility remaining – lets hope he stays.

The 2nd string QB needs a lot of work. It’s hard to believe he was a 5 Star recruit. He came in with an odd throwing motion.

If I was coaching him I’d just let him wing it like he did in HS. It’s too damn hard to correct after throwing that way for 12 years. He’s already got too much on his plate.

I like the 1st team OL – forget the 2nd team OL. We also finally have a stable of good RB’s with punch. So our offense will be good enough to keep us in most games.

I really like the DL – we’ve got pass rushers that will win a lot of games for us.

We could once again be in the hunt for the NC.
